Maurice,

As a member of Maine's Radioactive Waste Advisory Commission for 10 years and a close follower of the ups and downs of the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Plant, I would suggest that you take much of what Caxton says about the problems of nuclear being mostly political with a grain of salt. For example, Maine Yankee decided to shut down 10 years before its license expired because the cost of fixing the problems from premature aging were too high combined with the collapse of public confidence as the company's assertions about the adequacy and efficacy of its operation of the plant have been shown to be knowingly false. In addition, the reserves accumulated for retirement of the plant are wholly inadequate--a problem even Maine Yankee recognized years ago.

In the end, I thnk it comes down to whether humans are capable of operating a difficult and dangerous technology without error and whether a 30-40 year benefit of energy justifies the need to isolate the low level waste from the environment for a minimum of 500 years and the high level waste for a minimum of 10,000 years.
