December 26, 1997

Nikkei English News via Individual Inc. : TOKYO (Nikkei)--Worldwide sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment totaled some 3.09 billion dollars in October, 72.8% higher than a year earlier for the fifth straight month of year on year gain, an industry study revealed. The rise is attributed to growing demand, as chipmakers boost output of 64-megabit DRAMs, flash memory chips and high-speed logic chips.

The study by the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan and the Semiconductor Equipment Materials International showed strong growth in all regions. The North American market saw sales jump 103.0% year on year, Europe scored a 32.9% rise, and South Korea saw 85.8% growth. I think 98 will be a very interesting, lucrative and volitile year for this Sector. I'd like to address the lucrative side.
For the last 12-18 mos the street has been talking about needed consolidation in this group (lot of reasons, but to keep it simple, huge r&d costs). There are now several co's that have gone out and carved themselves quite lucrative nitche's (sp). I'll list a few, just for conversation, Sfam,Fsii,Klic,Cymi,Utek,Pria,Cohu,Klic etc, etc.
Morgan (ceo Amat) has said in the past that he feels Amat has all the expertise inside, to avoid going outside for an acquisition. Wrong!!!
I'll bet, your inheritance, that the big boys (Amat,Nvls,Lrcx,Klac, etc) will make some strategic acquisitions in 98, and that the big profits $$$, will go, to those of us, that can figure out, who those acquired Co's will be.Obviously, these low second tier stock prices, make acquisitions even more appealing.

Don't know if this was posted yet:
mercurycenter.com

Talk of .05 microns is a bit premature IMO, since the DUV's necessary for deep submicron (<.18 m) aren't here yet. In addition, .05 m is well ahead of the SEMI timetable unless I am mistaken. Would it make sense to push computing this far, this fast? As it now stands, computing ability doubles approx every 18 months. Implementing this would decrease this time dramatically. The question is, do we need such vast computing power so soon? BB, would appreciate any comments since I am not a techie.

Brian
