Gottfried,

Here's another good one from this morning's Chronicle:

sfgate.com

According to what I've been reading, the smoking ban in bars goes into effect on January 1, rather than on the 19th. It is ostensibly a workplace law, meant to protect the barkeeps from second-hand smoke.

From the Strange Statistics Department: It is written that 53,000 people die each year from diseases caused by second-hand smoke. I'd like to see that list!

In places where the barkeep is the owner and sole employee, smoking will be permitted. Also, smoking is permitted in bars and casinos on Indian reservations.

We are the only state to have such a law. Again, California leads the nation.
