You don't get public open space unless it's owned by the public.

Not entirely true, and not enough justification for the Feds owning almost all of Nevada and half of the west. Also not entirely relevant (since I've never argued that all federal land should be sold, and we aren't even discussing the large open public spaces owned by the states, or to a lesser extent by local governments.
