Scotsman,

Saw the DVD infomercial a few weeks back...great info! I too was ready to get on the phone and order one, but as you said: Hip Pocket National Bank wouldn't go for the expense. With the price of C-Cube these days I won't be doing much spending in the near future. Good luck to us and CUBE in the coming weeks.

Bill

MITACWEB BRINGS THE INTERNET ON TV
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taipei, December 19th 1997-- MiTAC Inc., the parent company of the MiTAC Group, has just taken the wraps off its latest set top box. Co-developed with MSU - a UK-based chipset manufacturer - MITACWEB brings new dimension to the TV platform.

Although the market is awash with webTV products, MITACWEB is in a class of its own. With a fine module design and lots of technological breakthroughs, MITACWEB brings together easy assembly, high efficiency at low-cost, and easy upgradability.

End-user Benefits

Providing easy access to the World Wide Web via TV MITACWEB enables even non-PC users and novices to surf the Internet without intimidation or prior knowledge of the PC. Put another way, MITACWEB brings the WWW at the user's fingertips, as the whole wide world of the Internet is just another click of the remote control away.

The device provides simple operation for Internet surfing and emailing. What's more, it's easy to set up - all the user needs is his regular TV, his regular phone, the remote control and the MITACWEB.

Connecting to and browsing the Internet is also a snap. Registration is done on-screen through the pre-loaded ISP and surfing is as easy as manipulating the 4 fast and 20 hot keys of the remote control. A remote keyboard provides another surfing option. MITACWEB also comes with a built-in e-mail address book and a WWW bookmark.

World-wide Acclaim

A winner of Taiwan's Golden Globe and the Symbol of Excellence '97 awards, MITACWEB has earned big applause for its unique design. Sold around the world under OEM brands, the product is reportedly doing well in American, European and Asia-Pacific markets. Recently, MITAC clinched a deal with a mass catalog marketing company, serving several central European ISP and Telecom companies, to promote and market the product in those markets. The demand in the region is expected to exceed 200,000 units annually.

Furthermore, in cooperation with Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry [III], MITACWEB Chinese version has been successfully incorporated on the SANYO TV to provide the world's first-ever Chinese Internet TV, thus opening doors for companies serving the needs of the Chinese market.

Immense Business Opportunities

Partners interested in jointly exploring the global market opportunities. MITACWEB offers will also be glad to know that the device has been certified to comply with the FCC B & CE standards as well as the NTSC and Pal TV systems. This ultimately implies that there is virtually no country in the world in which the box can't function properly. The box also opens the door for cooperation and joint ventures between OEMs and ISPs, content providers, and Telecom companies.

Refining & Expansion Plans

Though MITAC's sleekly-contoured MITACWEB is robust and provides the user with a scintillating out-of-the-box web experience, the company is not folding its arms and patting itself on the chest for a job well done, MiTAC remains committed to refining this new technology. It also plans to become a key player and provider of network computers and PCTV, a new platform that supports both TV and VGA modes. To this regard, the company will be launching its Netbox V2 PCTV with the Sanyo TV in the spring.

Scotsman, maybe you think that Bear Markets are the work of the Devil too, whereas in point of fact they are the result of human free choice which affirms its JUDGEMENT AS ABSOLUTE? Humans have a right to ask for the Impossible, so let it be!

The Digital advantage..............................................

Outlook '98

The digital advantage

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY is often applied differently to satellite, cable and terrestrial DVB, DVD, CD and DAB. But the basic concepts are the same.

Analog methods of transmission and recording of audio and video signals have proved acceptable enough to users over many years. But they have developed to the point that further improvements in quality and capacity are highly difficult. Analog signals require large amounts of bandwidth and storage space, as they are difficult to compress without damaging their quality; and analog signals are also susceptible to interference.

In contrast, when audio and video signals are digitized, they can be compressed and transmitted with less bandwidth or stored in a smaller space. Repetitive information is cut out and replaced with much shorter instructions. Information which is not actually needed, such as sounds the human ear cannot distinguish anyway, is taken out.

Error correction methods can also be incorporated within the encoding system used in a digital application. The signal is thus made much more robust and resistant to damage or interference.

Different types of digital signals can often be mixed together in the same data stream. In digital broadcasting applications, several channels of video, audio and pure data for example can be transmitted over a single multiplex.

Explosion of choice

Digital compressions enables more entertainment and information choices for the consumers, as well as product features which were not possible with analog equipment. Hundreds of new TV or radio channels are likely to become available through satellite, cable and terrestrial services.

Improvements in audio quality should be seen in all digital products, with 5.1 surround sound being made available both on DVB broadcasts and on DVD discs.

The sound quality of broadcast radio is expected to improve. Said Mitsubishi's Brodrick. "You get CD-standard sound everywhere, even when you're moving."

Digital's influence on picture quality will initially be most noticeable with DVD, where the improvement over VHS standards is very significant. Picture quality on broadcast television will improve with the introduction of HDTV, although in Europe this is expected to take some time to emerge.

"I believe that over time HDTV will be implemented," said Dassen. "But in the first stages people will be looking only for content with an acceptable level of quality, similar to what they are used to with analog. Later on, as people start to buy larger displays, there will be a move toward HDTV."
