Similarly, who really needs all those search engines? 2. While historically generous valuations continue, investors will be increasingly cruel to companies that disappoint. Look for negative earnings surprises to take an even greater toll on stock prices in the new year. 3. According to Wayne, a known contrarian, the buys for 1998 will be SystemSoft, which dominates the market for PCMCIA card software and is developing call-avoidance software to ease the mounting problem of tech support.
