People can believe abortion is the taking of a life without being an adherent of Jesus's teachings.

CJ, for your sake I'll ignore your silly abortion argument and talk instead about slavery, which is a more valid point.

You're right, the Bible never explicitly said that slavery was wrong. But a thorough reading of the entire Bible, from cover to cover, told theologians around the time of the abolition movement that slavery was wrong and should be considered a sin.

This resulted in a theological crisis at around the time of the Civil War, where pastors on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line were reading from the same Bible but coming to vastly different conclusions regarding slavery. Even then, the southern pastors were slowly coming around to the reality that the institution of slavery in the modern era could not fit into Christian theology.

None of this, however, involved inventing new interpretations of scripture. It's not a stretch to say that Jesus' teachings all pointed away from the institution of slavery. But it is a stretch to say that the protection again unwarranted search and seizure means being allowed to kill your own unborn child.

It's not a stretch to say that the Bible, while not explicitly forbidding the practice of owning slaves, clearly did not consider the practice to be a good thing, either. But it is a stretch to completely ignore the part about Roe vs. Wade where even the 4th amendment interpretation was subject to whether the unborn child should be considered a life that is afforded due protection of the law.
