If the Supreme Court takes a case and deadlock on it, it reverts to the previous court's ruling and that's it. Case closed. It occurs to me that Roberts, who as chief justice, gets to decide which cases are brought, can manipulate this.

If Roberts chooses cases where a conservative judgment was reached before it hit the supremes, and the case deadlocks, the conservative ruling stands.
