The problem in that statement is you're assuming "random chance" is the "more obvious and logical explanation."


The alternative being what? That God plans natural disasters and decides who lives and dies through them? You think that's more logical?

Because I can't think of a more human response than to ascribe such fortunate events to a higher purpose or a higher calling.

You think the Haiti earthquake was a fortunate event? Or the Tuscaloosa tornadoes? Or any number of other events that kill people indiscriminately?

Everything is just the result of dumb luck. Feel better now?"

You seem to think that religion is the only path to empathy...whether directed at myself or others. Frankly I'd feel terrible if I lived through a natural disaster while my neighbor's child or wife or you name them died, or lived with horribly disfiguring or crippling consequences . If I believed in any of the Gods humans ascribe to, I'd think them cruel, capricious entities.
