I think the proper response by Apple would be to unlock that particular phone, and make clear they're only doing it for that phone. After all, it might save some lives in the future.

No. But there is going to be a small percentage, fanatics, who will boycott apple. So this is on topic. Maybe 1% of America supports him fanatically. Of those a smaller percentage can afford to switch over.

Its small but in the gigantic world of Apple it means millions. On the other hand I think most people know they aren't criminals and just don't want big brother watching them as the NSA has in the past. So on balance Apple will probably gain customers.

They mentioned this on PBS Business news last night. The fact that "even government coders" can't get in. The general public doesn't know what I learned as a recruiter... businesses see government coders as less competent... maybe not at the top of the NSA, don't know about that.
