First, Senate Republicans vowed to bar President Barack Obama from appointing a replacement. Then the right-wingers began slamming the president for not attending Scalia’s funeral, though he did pay his respects on Friday at the Supreme Court, where the Justice’s body “lay in repose.” The Hill reports Ted Cruz blasted Barack Obama for skipping the funeral, even though the Texas Senator’s campaign had originally announced that he wasn’t able to go either. “We’ve got 11 more months of watching damage to this country from a lawless and faithless president, who is eager to travel to Cuba but unwilling even to show up at the funeral of Justice Scalia.” Then, as reported by Snopes, various right-wing hatriots began spreading the word that the president blew off Justice Antonin Scalia’s in order to play golf, even though Barack Obama did no such thing. And because conservatives can’t imagine people not behaving as they would behave, a right-wing website even accused Barack Obama of acting like a “spoiled child” and claiming that never in the history of the US has a president of the United States skipped a Supreme Court Justice’s funeral. Is it true that no President has failed to attend the funeral of a sitting Supreme Court Justice? Shame on you Barak Obama for Skipping Justice Scalia’s State funeral. Never been done by a president in our entire national history! You are a spoiled child, without respect for the office of president! Shame on you! Never one to miss an opportunity to call Barack Obama a Muslim, long-time birther Donald Trump jumped in the fray to scold the president: What a shame that our president has violated Donald Trump’s delicate sense of propriety. But guess what? While paying respects to the late Scalia at the Supreme Court on Friday was basically a required ritual, Barack Obama is hardly the first president of the United States to skip a Supreme Court Justice’s funeral. According to NBC, only four out of seven funerals for Supreme Court justices in recent memory were attended by a president or vice president. George W. Bush went to Chief Justice William Rehnquist’s funeral, and Bill Clinton went to Chief Justice Warren E. Burger and Justice William Brennan’s funerals. But Bill Clinton did not attend the funerals of Justice Harry Blackmun, Justice Lewis. F. Powell, Jr., or Justice Thurgood Marshall (though then-Vice President Al Gore went to Marshall’s). President Barack Obama could hardly be blamed for snubbing Justice Antonin Scalia’s funeral. After all, Scalia said and wrote horribly mean-spirited things while doing everything possible to send us back to the dark ages, while screwing ordinary Americans on behalf of his corporate paymasters. Scalia even died while vacationing at a luxury hunting resort, for which a Texas CEO paid the tab. But it’s more likely that our perpetually calm, cool and classy president simply had more pressing obligations and also wanted to avoid turning the late justice’s funeral into a three-ring circus.
