Apple's Time Machine updates my backups every hour.

I do a backup of my data files every month or two, and backup my important files weekly, both are done to external hard drives.

I do a complete system backup every 3 - 4 months. also to an external USB hard drive.

I have 3 external hard drives that I keep these backups on, just in case one of the backup hard drives fail.

Can't be too careful.
