...Doesn't matter if the poorest U.S. citizen is considered "rich" by poor people in, say, Brazil or India....

That's right Tenny, the poor in this country just don't realize how better off they are than other poor folks. Kinda like when you cleaned up your plate because there were poor kids starving in India...or Japan right after we bombed them with the most devastating weapon ever devised. But that was good, because we got more gardeners after the war than ever before.

The churches even preach this nonsense.

'You have God on your side my son. You are blessed beyond belief. Richer than Kings of yesteryear. Please pay before you leave to insure your front row seats in heaven."

Even the poverty rates between countries vary greatly depending on how you define it.

A fact you should actually use. Along with the concept that being below the poverty line means different things in different places. Being below the poverty line in Denmark means you have the same access to healthcare as the wealthy. You have paid sick leave, maternity leave, home help if all adults are working. An accident, health emergency or other unforeseen incident won't wipe out what little you have. Your children have equal access to education, even after high school and hence a better chance of upward mobility than in the US. And the numbers show it.

In the United States that isn't true. In the US, even the middle class is often only one crisis away from losing everything. Think about that. The poor in Denmark have more security from being totally wiped out than our middle class.

Comparing being poor in the US as different than in Brazil or India may seem to be a clever snark to you. It isn't.
