Shahen - Re: ". How does AMD's current market share of 10% compare to their best market penetration in the past? "

I believe AMD had 25% +/- 5% of the 386 market in late 1991 and 1992 after Intel withdrew almost entirely from 386 production and shifted to the 486.

Then in 1994, AMD might have had 20 or 25% of the x86 market as Intel phased out the 486 in favor of the Pentium.

In both cases, AMD produced a faster device but at the same time that Intel was transitioning to its next advanced processor.

Re: " Are the current price pressures between the two companies any different than they were back in the 486 days?"

Yes - Intel matched AMD in price reductions on Intel's older devices (486, 386) against similar devices for AMD (new products at the time for AMD). Intel maintained hefty prices on its newer (at the time) processors.

This time around, Intel is cutting prices all around, but the steepest cuts are in the "older" Pentium MMX line. However, the Pentium II prices are now being lowered significantly as well.

In addition, the FREQUENCY of price cuts is increasing - approaching two times per quarter instead of one time.

Re: " last quarter you had a pretty accurate forecast of the quarterly
report based on Intel's guidance at that time. Once the actual
report came out I was impressed by how close you got. Care to
do it again? "

I'll think about it - not that prediciting anything will help one way or the other.
