Not necessarily hunting with a handgun, but kids need to learn from an early age respect for the weapon and how to handle them.

How often did you go hunting with a handgun?

Depends on what you are after....but usually I carry a backup sidearm when hunting bear...had to carry when fishing on Kodiak....the Grizzlies will try to take your fish from you as you catch them.......
