Birth control pills are a lot more reliable. And there are other methods.

Even so, all have failure modes.

As far as abstinence, that goes against human nature. And biology. Prolonged abstinence can lead to psychological disorders and physiological problems. That is just a fact. To kowtow to your post-plague mentality that birth control and abortion are against the will of your Stone Age God is irrational.

I mention the plagues because the Catholic Church was silent on the subject prior to them. Afterwards, the nobility was unhappy about the labor shortages and they leaned on the Church to boost the population. The Bishops and the Pope went along with it because they too were feeling the effects of a smaller population.

It always comes down to money and power with wing nuts.
