Re: a possible acquisition... The Investors in @Home include:

Comcast Corporation, Cox Communications, Rogers
Cablesystems Limited, Shaw Communications, Inc.
and Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI), and venture
capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers . Its
partnerships with Comcast, Cox, Comcast,
InterMedia Partners, Marcus Cable, Rogers, Shaw
and TCI provide distribution access to nearly 50%
of all homes passed by cable in North America;

Cable TV giant Tele-Communications (TCI) owns a 40% stake, with Comcast, Cox Communications, and venture capital firm Kleiner
Perkins owning smaller amounts. Don't see how AT&T could fit in here. What I see, is an agreement between the top cable providors on an internet standard and platform that could be far more profitable than being acquired by a Telco. They could offer the service far cheaper to the consumer than any Telco could.
