Latest Asian Scam --- And you wonder why these guys don't go to jail.

The NYTimes today says the latest Asian scam is to borrow money in Asia in Yen at Asian rates (2.5%), turn around and convert that money to $$$$, take the $$$ and buy US Treasuries paying (6.0%). People doing this are betting that the Yen will continue to go down in relation to the $$$ and are pocketing the depreciation and the 3.5%.

Now the reverse of this scheme happens when there is any movement of the Yen higher (say on a continued unfavorable US balance of payments deficit). These people dump their US Treasuries in an eyeblink on the news to protect their currency exposure.

The rest of the doomsday repatriation scenario then unfolds.

Will Japan be able to weather the storm?
(1) Watch the Nikkei---all the banks security holdings are junk below 14,000.
(2) Watch for some major banks to go belly up in JAPAN.
(3) See if Korea gets past a default.

Happy New Year or maybe.
