Barrons short info noted a 6.7 % drop in AAPL short interest from Nov (21.3 mill) to mid Dec (19.8 mill). As AAPL's stock price eased during that interval so it appears the AAPL shorts decreased ? But why ? What do you speculate is happening here ?

AAPL dropped steadily from high teens to about 14 during this period. It's only natural for investors to cover their shorts and take their profits. It'll free up the margin and allow them to buy into various stocks at these bargain prices and participate in the next run up.

Patrice,

Sorry about the link. I think it's a good link to a bad server. Hopefully, they'll get it sorted out today.

High short interest can be a contrary indicator. I don't read the slight drop in AAPL short interest as anything more than statistical noise at this point. The company/stock remain contoversial to say the least. I suspect there are a bunch of longs who have hedged their bets in addition to the hard-core Apple-is-dead crowd.

Some interesting stories about Apple today. Rather than give you a bunch of links, here's one to a news clipping service dedicated to Apple: macsurfer.com.
