I'll add two cents more to this one.

I work in a company where networking is used for file backup, some storage and also for some applications support. Our experience is somewhat disastrous, in part because of the competence of the NA personnel.

The biggest problem, however is that the Network Administration reports to the VP of finance and our network was built over 5 years ago with hardware that was not new at the time. Because of this mgt. structure, the value of the network to the Co. operations is not fully appreciated, network operations are underfunded and, therefore, we are forced to cope with obsolete hardware and software.
I was once able to buy a new hard drive for my PC with petty cash and get relief from my overcrowding. When the Network resources get overloaded, the problem gets addressed in next FY's budget with a hard drive from a workstation vendor at a much higher price.

Our network does file backup on Friday afternoon and one of the NA's people has to be on hand to change tape cartridges. Because the NA wants to get home as early as possible on Friday, he runs file backups at the highest priority, therby locking up those lower priority hard-working souls who have something to finish at 6pm on Friday.

I agree wholeheartedly that the adoption of the NC by a company makes them vulnerable to the failure of the central resources. More importantly, it also makes the company more vulnerable to the stupidities of the Network administrator. Lastly, it also amplifies the stupidity of management which insists on perpetuating the dark ages.
