day of trade.... means...even though most "traders" are indeed short term... they can distinguish a long term investment by designating it as such.....i.e... that they will not mark it to market...but this must be done on the day of trading..... one way to do it, is to send yourself an email referencing the trade....thereby...the e mail serves as a time and date stamp for the reference.....

so.... if you want to mark to market, assuming you qualify as a trader, you can also distingish certain assets exempt or long term investments...by the above... you are not forced to mark to market everything you own if you think about what you want to protect on the day you acquire it.
