The crime was committed when the private server was set up in the closet.
Even that doesn't matter. For all we know, the server could have been protected with measures far stronger than what the State Department uses for its own servers, but it's not relevant when it comes to information security.

You need to have uniform and consistent standards across your entire system. You can't just let people "roll their own servers" and trust that their security measures are the same or better than yours, because that's an assumption you are not allowed to make.

These are basic themes behind information security, and it's telling to me that people who have worked in technology (which I assume is a good portion of this thread) don't understand or are not willing to understand because they're "Ready for Hillary."
