ct, re Does the settlement date have to be in 1997 to get the loss? If so, we are out of that period for taking a 1997 tax loss. Maybe next week will pick up.

No. For tax purposes the holding period starts and ends on the trade date, not the settlement date. So tax loss selling can continue through the 31st (Wed).
