This is an excellent solution if and only if the id's already exist on all current Iomega disks. All disks currently in use have to remain useable. If the existing 100,000,000 or so Iomega disks won't work in new drives, this is not what the military calls "acceptable collateral damage". I have no idea whether Iomega foresaw this problem and put some kind of readable code on the disks from the beginning.
