Dulane: Front page of today's (Sunday) Oregonian is story on how Intel's Hillsboro, OR division paid 15% of the total Oregon State income taxes collected by the State for 1997. $100 million was the figure, enough to run several state depts. That was just the state's take, not to mention the large bonuses given to employees, who live and consume in Oregon. I'm just mentioning this to say that even though the top execs at Intel probably pull down some fairly huge (some would say more than fair share) compensation, those rich individuals and also the rich corporations pay the freight (State & Fed income tax) on many of govt programs which benefit not the rich but the poor. This is compassion, and it is the way American citizens have formed this society to operate. I'm personally neither rich nor poor, so I don't have any complaints. I've heard it said though, that America has the richest poor people on earth (so I agree with you).
