The solution should be for this iPhone, ONLY. This may involve slicing off the sides of the device to reach
the HD or some other solution, rather than new software. The FBI should not expect their iPhone to be
returned to them, only the results. If Apple does the job, they should insist that only their personnel be
present at the "grand opening".

This here prevents all possible negative outcomes. If FBI didn't agree to these terms, it would mean they don't care as much about this data as the 'loophole' itself.

Good post.

Unfortunately, the money will end up coming out of the taxpayer's pocket.

I don't think the courts can decide this sets no other precedence for later courts. IMO, it has to set a precedence as that is the way our system is set up. Either a company is compelled or they are not compelled. There is no middle ground.

My big worry is if Apple loses, then every country in the world will point to the decision of the American court and demand the same outcome (Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, third world dictator, etc.). I find that worrisome as Apple consumers will no longer be secure in the products they use from the company.
