In some respects the Republican party is going through what the Democratic party went through in the 1970s and 1980s. The big tent put together by FDR was showing signs of stress and many projected that it would totally fracture because of it. As it turned out, it was just the Dixiecrats and the racists who left, everyone else reached an accommodation, however uneasy. One reason that many groups stayed, like unions, is the Republican party made them hated groups.
