Japanese manufacturers had chosen to produce low-quality products there.

I was going to wrote a follow up posting on that same idea.

I was going to tell that in 1996 I was in Java Island and the Japanese were there reassembling the petrochemical plants they dismantled in Japan and shipped to Indonesia.

Next they started shipping to China the outdated plants they had in Japan.

Germany used Brazil as its China in the 70s and 80s too. As soon as the German IGMetall union completed a round of negotiations with their employers in Germany, I could see in Sao Paulo state a hole in the ground of a Siemens factory step down transformers or other electrical gear.
