Pkrbkr,
No and yes they should take the initiative and at every opportunity.
I'm reminded of the nutjob who went into a Planned Abortionhood clinic and started firing, killing three people and injuring many more. The activist atheists here were gleefully using that event and saying, "See, see? Christians are terrorists too!" They were demanding that people like me take the initiative and use every opportunity to condemn the shooter.

I didn't bother because (a) I already do condemn the shooter, (b) I don't recognize the shooter as a "fellow Christian," and (c) I shouldn't have to answer for the crimes of nutcases who happen to be opposed to abortion like I am. I knew that it was a waste of time to try and appease these activist atheists because they just don't give a damn.

Likewise with my Muslim peers, I'm not going to demand that they make up for the sins of the extremists among them. The blame should be assigned on the people responsible for the killings and the radicalization, not on the people who happen to follow the same Koran but in a much different way. And even those who follow Sharia Law, which isn't that far removed from radicalization, are OK with me as long as they don't force it upon others.

It's one thing to assign responsibility to those who are directly responsible, but when you start holding those who want nothing to do with radicalization responsible for trying to root out the radicals among them, you're essentially condemning them to crimes they haven't committed themselves and would never think of committing no matter how much you THINK they would.
