That made my day, thanks-lol.

Another Dick story: after he finished his book Hunters of the Northern Ice he went south and lived with the Athabascan. He tells a story of when he was on a snowmobile and it was about 35 below zero and his balls were freezing. So he had to get a rabbit skin and stick it inside his pants to cover his balls. That book is called Hunters of the Northern Forest.

Then when he came down to Southeast Alaska he lived in a cabin I owned. And he was going to write a book Hunters of the Southeast. But Southeast Alaska has the thickest biomass in the world. And the deer are small and can hide in that forest and are very hard to hunt. To make a long story short he never did shoot one and he told me I can't write a book about Hunters of the Southeast Alaska if I can't kill one of the deer-lol. the deer and Southeast have the most wonderful flavor because they eat very mild plants. A person is loud for a year and the hunting has no impact on the population at all. They could probably allow unlimited hunting.

He is sort of like a modern day Jack London. He lives in Sitka these days and spends half his time in Australia and half his time in Sitka. His book "the island within" has been compared to Thoreaus Walden Pond. I always chided him that he kept writing these scientific books, but that his genius lay in his creativity. So when he moved to Sitka he went out on an island and lived by himself for months on end and wrote the book the island within.

When my daughter was going to UC Berkeley she was assigned that book. Dick always said the only kid he ever saw grow up was my daughter.

Dick was also one of the first people to ever surf Yakutat that is become quite popular. He and his Hawaiian surfer check used to surf there all the time. It has become quite famous as the waves are so perfect. Course you do have to keep an eye out for the giant brown bears that roam the beach-lol.
