TALX Announces Preliminary Third-quarter Revenue Expectations ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 1998--TALX Corp. (NASDAQ:TALX - news) said that preliminary results indicate that revenues will be between $5.4 million and $5.7 million for the third quarter ended Dec. 31, 1997. In the year-earlier third quarter, TALX reported revenues of $5.1 million and earnings from continuing operations of $384,000, or $0.08 per share. The company's revenues will fall short of expectations because several significant contracts for customer premises systems were not executed as anticipated. The holidays and other activities related to year-end for these clients interrupted the orderly processing of contracts. The Work Number and Outsourced Services -- the major recurring and transactional lines of business -- met or exceeded the company's expectations. William W. Canfield, chairman and chief executive officer, said he is encouraged by new business in the pipeline for customer premises systems, but it is too soon to gauge the impact on TALX's fourth-quarter results. ''We continue actively marketing TALX's capabilities, and we are working on new channels and applications for our products, including The Work Number. We expect to begin field testing the full version of our TALXWare technology under the Windows NT operating system this month,'' Canfield pointed out. He added, ''At the same time, we are assessing the impact of our customers' inclusion of Web-based capabilities in their self-service solutions, which at this stage are proving themselves more complex than standard IVR applications. That complexity translates to a longer sales cycle,'' Canfield observed. He said TALX will continue to develop its capabilities to deliver solutions for its customers. ''Our goal is to help our clients enhance service levels, improve productivity and reduce costs by enabling users to perform self-service transactions using interactive communications technologies. The better we do these things, the more we enhance TALX's long-term growth prospects,'' he said. TALX Corp. designs and implements interactive web and interactive voice response solutions for self-service transactions, primarily for Fortune 500 and other large organizations. TALX uses computer telephony to integrate technologies such as interactive voice response, facsimile, e-mail, Internet and corporate Intranet. The company's interactive communications solutions enable an organization's employees, customers, vendors and business partners to access, input and update information without human assistance. Statements in this news release expressing the beliefs and expectations of management regarding future performance are forward-looking and involve risks and uncertainties, including, without limitation, the risks detailed in the Company's Form 10-K for the year ended March 31, 1997, and those described in other documents and reports filed from time to time with the Securities and Exchange Commission, press releases and other communications. These include, but are not limited to, intense competition in the interactive web and interactive voice response industry, dependence on certain strategic marketing alliances, risks associated with technological change, a lengthy sales cycle, and the continued and increasing acceptance of The Work Number for Everyone(R). Actual results may differ materially from management expectations. Contact: TALX Corp. Craig N. Cohen/Jackie Engel, 314/434-0046
