The trend in technology is rapidly shifting toward speech recognition, and natural language processing and to make keyboards, and mouse obsolete. IBM currently has the most aggressive plan in this area followed by Microsoft, and a bunch of small startups, and hopefully soon Sun will join the trend. Speech recognition/language processing in 98 and going into 2000 will be what GUI development tools and databases were in the late 80's early 90s. The 2 primary ingrediants for the success of speech recognition and language processing are lots of memory and fast microprocessors. Merced therefore will be, in my opinion, a huge success. Even without considering this new shift in R&D and technology trend, the immediate impact of Merced will be enormous.
