At last month's Kona announcement, Jeff Papows, president of Lotus Development Corp., spoke with CRN Executive Editor Barbara Darrow and Assistant Editor Lee Pender about the company's latest technology and industry trends.
"We've got a model here that's very different from what Corel did. This was a clean sheet of paper, re-architected from the ground up. Remember, we've been working on this for about 26 months. . . . It has taken longer than we expected. The honest truth is we expected to be out in October and we'll be out in January."

That was an excellent account of Corel's failings ... if looks like
it came out of a project management textbook describing
how _not_ to do a project. It was clear from the start that from
upper levels down there was no clear consensus what was
being implemented.

Applix more cautiously approached the Java-migration and
chose the correct model (client/server) and migration
plan - gradual Java migration.

Java was in it's infancy (prior to JDK 1.1 + JFC) and Corel
should have realized that a pilot project or gradual migration
was the way to go ... not betting the farm on a complete
re-write of their entire office products in a new language.

Cheers
James
