U.S. TRADING SUMMARY: Wall Street stocks were strong at midday
Monday as traditional year-end buying emerged and investor jitters
over South Korea's financial crisis eased. "This is a classic,
end-of-year type of action with the background of a lesser Asian
crisis, at least in South Korea," said Charles Pradilla, market
analyst at Cowen & Co. Strong inflows of cash into stocks should
boost equities through the second week of January, Pradilla said.
The recent sell-off in technology stocks was overdone, he added.
The Dow, boosted by stronger technology and bank stocks, rose more
than 100 points early in the session. At 1:20 p.m. ET, the blue
chip index was up 98 points at 7777. The S&P 500 index gained 14
points to 950. Advances led declines by more than two to one on
light NYSE volume of 278 million shares. The Nasdaq was up 18
points at 1529.
