"bothered by the term backwoods."

Not at all; If you drive 45 min. east of Highway 101 to Round Valley, and then head towards Trinity Co for 45 miles, which will take you a few hours, you'll find yourself in a real backwoods town, named Zenia.

We use "boonies" a lot, for both the town, and people living way out; like an hour to the highway, and then another half hour to town.

"Cause you don't think you have enough trees to be in the backwoods."

Location, location, location. I'm too close to civilization to be in the backwoods. If I crashed thru a few gates (say, in the event of a worst-case scenario wildfire evacuation like this one.. abc7news.com ), I can be on a US Highway in about 3 minutes.

" you grew up watching the Ma and Pa Kettle movies "

I didn't know that. Tell me more. I'm sure it will make for an entertaining tale. My version would go, "August West dropped out and became a wharf rat when he was denied entrance to college for failing the question, "Ma and Pa Kettle are..." on his SAT test.
