The register is generally too complicated for the math challenged. Having once been a Safeway checker and a math major I'm somewhat good with both numbers and making change quickly. So I constantly do things like pitch in a little change to leave me with fewer coins. So if the bill is $4.89 I'll hand them $5.14 - some do the right thing and just enter the numbers and let the machine tell them .25 cents change - others are simply flummoxed and then enter $5.00 and then fumble around. Make the wrong change and close the drawer, then have to call the manager over to open the drawer and make the right change. My kids groan when I do this - I also just toss all my change into a self pay register at Walmart or WinCo - let it give me back the least coins - most of the time that works.
