At the risk of being attacked by the shorts because I like to time sales instead of selling because it looks too high I will answer.
I track the ratio of total shares to shares in the float. Increasing the float without an increase in total shares is a signal that insiders or five percent holders are selling. Five percent holders aren't included in the float. This isn't the only thing I look at, just one of the things that works for me.
