The report was exactly "there might be a banking crisis in China and it is different than in Korea." That is all I heard at approximately 10:00 AM and nothing after that. If there was something major those guy's would have repeated it every 10 minutes.

Banks agree on credit plan

THE Export and Import Bank of China (Eximbank) signed an agreement over the weekend to authorize Bank of China to handle its export seller's credits to promote the nation's machinery and electronic exports.

"The signing of the agreement marked a new stage of co-operation between the two banks," said Lei Zuhua, Eximbank president.

The co-operation will enable Eximbank to take advantage of BOC's widespread subsidiaries to deal with its loans to various machinery and electronic enterprises. It is beneficial for the Eximbank to provide better and more convenient services for enterprises and enhance the management of its loans.

BOC will serve as the agent to issue, supervise and recall the loan projects extended by the Eximbank. This also provides more business opportunities for BOC and helps fortify its strength.

Eximbank is one of the country's three policy banks set up in 1994. It is designed to provide policy-oriented financial services to facilitate the exports of China's capital goods including machinery and electronic products as well as complete sets of equipment.

The export-oriented machinery and electronic enterprises are scattered around the country, lacking operational affiliates and settlement service. This hinders the Eximbank to some extent from providing quality services to these enterprises and intensifying its asset management.

Consequently, "it will be a feasible solution to let commercial banks be agents for policy-oriented businesses," Lei said. Date: 12/29/97
