Koan,

I think I understand your nuance now. Byrd was a conservative, and all the republicans that voted in favor of the civil rights act were liberal.

I don't know how you come to the conclusion that conservative principles are anti civil rights and liberal principles are pro civil rights. I don't get that.

What I'm saying is that the labels are incorrect. If one were to go back and check my posts on SI for 15 years you will see that over and over and over I have said that you cannot compare the parties because the liberals and conservatives have not always been represented by the name of the party.

The Dixiecrat's were hard-core conservative racists. After the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Lyndon Johnson said we have lost the South for a generation. And he was dead right and immediately after 1964 the Republicans went down to the South and told the Dixiecrat's that if they would join the Republican Party they wouldn't push integration any more than they had to e.g. affirmative action, etc. And they used those issues as dog whistles. Go read my post or Google it on Lee Atwater's Southern strategy where he says it in plain English that that's what they were doing. He apologized for doing that at the end of his life saying it was a terrible thing that he did. today they are using voter suppression and have admitted it several times.

But it is what the Republicans did to get the South to vote for them after the 1964's Civil Rights Act; and they were very successful in the South voting for them as a block for over 50 years. A grand irony is that the Republican Party is the official arm of the plutocrats.

So the first thing they did when they got power in the South was destroy the unions and destroy the social safety net is much as they can. Look how they resisted bringing Medicaid into the states in the South. The poor in the South need that Medicaid. There are willing to submit millions of poor people in the South to not having proper healthcare for the sake of some hair brain ideology. It was a terrible thing, as the South needs the unions and social safety nets more than any other part of the country. They depend on them more than any other part of the country e.g. food stamps welfare, etc.

An entire book was written on this phenomenon of the poor white Southerner voting against his best interest which is called:" what is wrong with Kansas"?

For all of the history in the United States the fight has been between liberals and conservatives. Party names change.

Another deceptive thing the Republicans do constantly is calling the Republican Party, the party of Lincoln. Factually speaking that is dead wrong. The party of Lincoln is the Democratic Party. The conservatives like to claim liberal heros as their own after the fact.

The reason for that is that Lincoln was a liberal, a North East liberal. In the days of Lincoln the South East were the conservative slave states. Up until 1900 the liberals were represented by the Republican Party and the conservatives were represented by the Democratic Party. Around 1900 and Teddy Roosevelt that switched and the conservatives became the Republican Party e.g. Harding and Coolidge and Hoover and the Democratic Party became the Liberal party e.g. Wilson and FDR.

The Dixiecrat's were hard-core conservatives. And Robert Byrd was never a liberal. In fact he was a member the Ku Klux Klan. But he renounced his past and admitted he was wrong and he was one of ours. But you can't generalize from Robert Byrd to the entire Democratic Party or the liberals.

The truth of the matter is if you go back through history and divide all the great successes between liberals and conservatives, you will see that the liberals have almost always been on the right side of things. One of the challenges I give to everyone is you tell me a few major issue of the 20th century where the liberals were on the wrong side of the issue and the conservatives were on the right side of the issue.

And today the Democratic Party is the home of the liberals. And every single minority Asian, African-American, and Hispanic vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic Party because they know that they are the ones with their best interest in mind. That is why the Republicans are resorting to voter supression to keep their votes down. And the dems also have the smart kids and the women.

. Why don't you just join the liberals and be on the right side of the issues and the right side of history?
