We'd settle for either as a Hillary opponent, both would lose. Cruz would probably actually lose worse than Trump. The fear is, the GOPe will spring some more generally palatable candidate at the convention, and give the nom to him. They know Trump and Cruz are losers, and what party wants to deliberately field a loser?

Also, they know that Hillary is a weak candidate with soft support, and with changing American demographics, this may be their last shot at the presidency in a long while.
