ByGoneYrs,

From Ted Cruz book "A Time for Truth"

When he was 13, Cruz decided to change his name to “Ted.” Born Rafael Edward Cruz, he’d gone by the nickname “Felito” most of his life. Cruz describes the nickname often resulted in him being teased. He refers to that time of his life as a time where he was an “unpopular nerd.”

“The problem with that name was that it seemed to rhyme with every major corn chip on the market. Fritos, Cheetos, Doritos and Tostitos- a fact that other young children were quite happy to point out,” Cruz wrote.

Cruz wrote that his mother gave him the idea to change his name: “‘Ted’ immediately felt like me. But my father was furious with the decision. He viewed it as a rejection of him and his heritage, which was not my intention.”

Given Name EDWARD

GENDER: Masculine
USAGE: English, Polish
PRONOUNCED: ED-w?rd (English), ED-vahrt (Polish) [key]

Meaning & History
Means "rich guard", derived from the Old English elements ead "wealth, fortune" and weard "guard". Saint Edward the Confessor was the king of England shortly before the Norman conquest. He was known as a just ruler, and because of his popularity this name remained in use after the conquest when most other Old English names were replaced by Norman ones. The 13th-century king Henry III named his son and successor after the saint, and seven subsequent kings of England were also named Edward. This is one of the few Old English names to be used throughout Europe (in various spellings).

DIMINUTIVES: Ed, Eddie, Eddy, Ned, Ted, Teddy (English)

If he were ashamed of his heritage and his father, he'd have changed the last name, not the first.

BTW Ted's father's first name is also Rafael. Ditto for his grandfather. Three Rafael's in a row.

BTW, Ulysses Grant was actually named Hiram Ulysses Grant at birth.
