Have you ever seen how packed they get at rush hour?
Oh yeah, I've experienced it myself. Not quite to the extent where my face is smashed against the window, but enough to be "up close and personal" with the strangers next to me.

Unfortunately I could not use them to prop myself up, as I'm bigger than the average Japanese person, so I still had to hang onto something.
