4/22/16 Contest update
The Theranos blood testing technology didn’t turn out to be the breakthrough its founder, Elizabeth Holmes, touted it’d be. But a short seller merely had to raise the specter of Theranos in a hit piece on another biotech, Intrexon, to draw blood from its stock, which hemorrhaged close to 10 points or about 25% on Thursday. XON is in just three Contest portfolios, so despite its bloodletting the Contest median was still able to post a gain for the week, albeit a fairly anemic one.
At Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -19.02% YTD (vs. down -20.95% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -14.82% YTD (vs. down -17.06% YTD a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -17.63% YTD (vs. down -19.48% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed down -2.02% YTD (vs. down -1.38% YTD a week ago).
DNAJOE’s portfolio, up 14.89% YTD, remained in first place and it now has company in the green pastures. MASTER’s portfolio, up 3.63% YTD, is in second place and GENE’s portfolio, up 3.47% YTD, is in third place. Also in the green is fourth place GHMM’s portfolio, up .65% YTD.
At Friday’s close, 54 of the 58 Contest portfolios were in the red, with 16 beating the NBI and 26 still beating the SPSIBI. The 224 Contest stock picks had an average YTD loss of -14.50% and a median YTD loss of -15.48%, with 44 of the 224 Contest portfolio stocks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week, ranked by % Gained and % Lost. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a relaxing weekend biotechies!
Happy Passover to those celebrating the holiday!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
