" Burger King to give away fries on Jan. 2 "

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Burger King said Monday it will
give away free french fries to anyone walking into or
driving up to one of its fast food restaurants in the
United States and Canada on Jan. 2.

The giveaway, ''with no purchase required and no
strings attached,'' will allow consumers to sample its
reformulated french fries, which were ''judged superior
to McDonald's in a nationwide, independent consumer
taste test,'' the company said in a statement.

It said the give-away will be the largest one-day
sampling event in the history of fast food.

Mr. Potato Head, the classic children's toy and now
Burger King's ''spokespud,'' will be featured in
advertising as well as on-site promotions for the french
fries, Burger King said.

Burger King said it will spend about $70 million on a
marketing and advertising campaign for the new french
fries.

General market advertising will feature a claymation
version of Mr. Potato Head. Singer Isaac Hayes will sing
about the new fries to the tune of his classic hit,
''Shaft.'' This advertising is being handled by Ammirati
Puris Lintas, New York. Hispanic market advertising is
being handled by Bromley, Aguilar and Associates of San
Antonio, Texas, and advertising to the African-American
market is being handled by UniWorld Group Inc., New
York, a Burger King spokeswoman said.

The new fries have a double potato coating, the
spokeswoman said, and stay hotter longer.

The new french fries, which are currently in many
Burger King restaurants, are coated with potato starch.
They contain potatoes, soybean oil, food/corn starch,
rice flour, salt and levening.

A medium sized order contains 400 calories, 150 calories
from fat. It has 820 mgs of sodium, the company said.

Burger King, a division of Diageo PLC, and franchisees
have more than 9,000 restaurants in the United States
and 56 countries around the world.
