Funds can buy, legally. It's just that for a fund manager to initiate a position in a "fallen angel", under tax loss selling, a few days before the 12/31 performance numbers become etched in stone; well, suffice it to say that it could well prove to be a career-ending event. Would you risk your '97 gains to perhaps make some '98 gains where you can capture the '98 gains starting on the first business day of January, without risk to your '97 gains? Think about it.
