Tom, if you think Corel is doing poorly, take a look at Quarterdeck, Borland, Novell, to name a few one-time high flyers. All of them turned out excellent software. Of course, one could debate forever which cmpany has had the most incompetent or shortsighted CEOs.

I too used Word in the late 80s for a mercifully brief period of time. It had to be one of the chunkiest pieces of mainstream software I have encountered. Couple that with the fact that Word was not backward compatible with its previous versions, and Microsoft even went so far as to change the commands from version to version. I learned this from talking with people who have used Word through the years. They could never make themselves really feel at home in Word.

Back when Windows first started showing up and computer users were mutting and guffawing among themselves that Bill Gates must be crazy to think that Windows would ever be taken seriously as business software, my favorite tagline of the day was, "Get Windows and turn your 386 into an 8088." It's so true!

Yup, an ounce of image is worth a pound of performance. Of course bundling and restrictive licensing agreements helped.
