Michael, re: "Their strategy seems to be, to get slot one as the defacto standard fast, while at the same time squeezing AMD/NSM dry of any potential profits."

Agree with that assesment, but I also think that the statement by the Intel representative, that the PII/233 price cut was at the request of OEM's should be taken at face value. Looking back to last year, with the anticipated release of MMX AFTER the first of the year, 4th quarter sales were relatively slow. As a result, 1st quarter, with the new MMX computer was stronger than normal. I expect Compaq and Dell (others) will have easy comparisons, year over year, for this reporting period, but may be challenged for the next typically slow quarter. My GUESS is that Intel is trying to help out it's partners by offering steeper discounts earlier to generate additional sales into the period.

re: "If I was a marketing manager at Intel, I would have a chart over every marketing rep's desk, showing the daily estimate of household PC penetration rates with a goal of 50% by the end of the century in the U.S."

Just an opinion, but with the lowering prices in PC components, by next year we could see a $499. PC, complete with monitor. I DON'T think this will be bad for Intel, expansion of a market where you have a 85% to 90% market share is almost allways a good thing (what company do you know that wouldn't encourage a 25% increase in their marketplace). If we can be lucky enough to get to that price point, 50% should be an easy goal by the end of the first quarter, 1999.

By the end of 1998, we should also have digital TV broadcast, Win 98, NT ??, all of which could have a significant impact on high end sales.

Now that would be an interesting way to spend your days!
