Intel chops chip prices
Monday December 29 7:01pm

PC makers received a belated Christmas gift today from Intel Corp., which dropped the price of a 233MHz Pentium II from $401 to $268 in 1,000-unit quantities.

The 33 percent price drop on the 233MHz model will be followed in late January with cuts on virtually all other Intel processors, according to sources.

Intel, of Santa Clara, Calif., dropped prices of Pentium II and Pentium with MMX processors in November as part of its regular quarterly pricing adjustments.

Although company spokeswoman Luanne Darbonne said today's reduction was planned, it is highly unusual for Intel to offer an interim price cut. She said the move was in response to PC makers' desire to lower prices on their systems.

Indeed, many PC manufacturers already have Pentium II-based systems priced below $1,500, and today's price cut will spark even lower PC prices.
