A New Payoff For Patient Mac-o-Philes - Microsoft to Introduce A Macintosh Office 98 via Washington Post >Led by Ben Waldman, the energetic general manager of Microsoft's Macintosh business unit (a position that did not exist a year ago), a team of 125 or so Mac developers has worked to build solid product "from the ground up" and simultaneously establish its own identity within Microsoft. Development priorities shifted from passive compatibility and total integration of development efforts to a sharp focus on Mac user needs with special attention to ease of use. This shift has been accompanied by an emphasis on building software that makes the best of the OS-8 platform and recognizes, at least according to Waldman, that Mac users can have needs that differ from those of Windows users. Mac users "want more Mac-like interfaces and want their programs to integrate well with other Mac applications," he said in a phone interview last week. Meanwhile, the reinvigorated Mac development effort was magnified and given additional credibility when Apple and Microsoft announced a strategic agreement in August. That announcement involved browser software, a Microsoft investment in Apple and a reaffirmation of Microsoft's development plans for the Macintosh platform. Future emphasis, Waldman suggests, will be less on congruency between the Windows and Mac worlds and more on giving users improved tools on each platform, with as much commonality as possible. But to Mac users of these Microsoft products, the key is that Office 98 Mac and its component programs do have a future: not just in the new Mac edition, but beyond. Waldman says we can count on it.<washingtonpost.com :80/wp-srv/WPlate/1997-12/29/012l-122997-idx.html soup (sleepless in NY ... )
