Trump may have zoomed in on a key to success, that is, recognition that the average American voter has an attention span of a few minutes. As a result he can say anything in the primaries (to get free publicity) and morph into a different candidate for the general.

As of now Trump has spent just over $50 Million, of which $3 million has been outside money and the rest is his own money. Hillary is over 250 Million at this point, I think.
